Difficulties for Lao students in Vietnam being addressed
The Student Affairs Department at the Ministry of Education and Sports will ensure that all Lao students living and studying in Vietnam understand the privilege they have been given and respond correctly by working hard and observing the regulations of their hosts.
Working through the education and culture office at the Lao Embassy in Vietnam, the department will also cooperate with the universities and institutions there to make sure the Lao students study hard and accumulate knowledge that they can bring back home with them.
This information was confirmed yesterday by the Director General of the Student Affairs Department, Professor Dr Khamleusa Nuansavanh, after receiving many complaints about their behaviour over the years.
An example of this was some students who did not pay close attention to their studies and wasted their time on unproductive things which caused them to take longer than expected to finish their courses while others dropped out entirely, according to a recent report from the department.
To address the issue Dr Khamleusa told Vientiane Times that the department will work with concerned sectors, including university directors and lecturers in Vietnam, to monitor the Lao students' activities and studies through reports from a committee for Lao students in Vietnam and to provide assistance to those found to be struggling.
“Educating students to love and respect each other and also embrace their responsibility to preserve the strong traditions and relations that exist between Laos and other countries by fully concentrating on their courses is one part of the issues discussed at the 8th annual meeting of the National Committee on Education Reform, which ended in Vientiane yesterday,” he said.
The embassy will also hold talks with education institutions to organise seminars focused on how to improve the quality of learning undertaken by Lao students during the time they studied there.
At these functions, Lao students in Vietnam will be encouraged to remain faithful to their political ideology and belief in the direction of the Party and state.
Dr Khamleusa stressed that the number of Lao students enrolling in universities and other higher education institutions in Vietnam has increased steadily each year, while they still face difficulties in terms of their basic knowledge of the Vietnamese language and often end up returning home before completing their courses.
But future Lao students in Vietnam will find things easier after the ministry announced a new scheme to monitor the three-month training course on the Vietnamese language in Laos before departing for Vietnam and perhaps increase this to more than one year if necessary.
“The scheme is supported by the government of Vietnam and has become a priority project of the ministry with the aim of making life easier for Lao students when they go to study there,” Dr Khamleusa added.
For the 2013-2014 academic year over 900 Lao students will receive scholarships from the government of Vietnam to study at universities and other higher education institutions there. The scholarships include short and long term study.
Why the heck send Lao students to study in Vietnam where you have first to waste some years to master the language?
