I have read some discussions about the mutual intelligibility between the two languages, but people seem to have different opinions.

Can native Thai and Lao speakers understand each other without learning?

If compared with other languages, are Thai and Lao closer to each other than Thai and Dai are to each other?

Thai come from Notheast of Thailand can understand what Lao speak, Another part of Thailland can understand a little but they will able to

understand more if they listen every day, because both language are similiar .

as for Lao, Most of Lao do understand Thai especially in Thai speaking and are able to read Thai and of course not everyone can read thai, if you

never learnt Thai, you wont be able to write thai correctly .

I am a Thai and I understand Loa quite well, I found not any problem while we were talking by our own speeches to one each other. Comparing the southern dialect, The many Bangkokians are more mutual intelligible Lao language than southern Thai dialect. And by the fact, many Laos people speak Bangkok language more beautiful than a lot Thais from the southern provinces.

Thai and Lao Language are very close like German in Germany and Swiss German, not between British English and American English. We both mutual intelligible, but we speak in different tone , some words and little expression.

Because Lao and Thai came from the same ancestor Jao Khounboulom

and has the similar culture and vocabulary. Lao and Thai were ally fight

against Burma and China but start hate each other in 1779 when Siam

invade Lanxang.
