South Korea relied primarily on the education and formation of skilled work force from their own people needed for the development of their country with the help mostly from the US and then Japan. The same thing happened in Taiwan. Taiwan was much poorer than the Philippines 45 years ago. Look at it now, the Philippines is a relatively corrupted and poor country, compared with Taiwan. Laos relied primarily on educated people and funds from foreign countries for the exploitation of its own natural resources. Laos totally lack a high skilled work force needed for the development of the country. Vietnam, like China, invested heavily on the education of their own people.
DOn't worry... We have smartest and brightest leaders in the whole world. Laos will become the first world country soon if we all follow and listen to our smartest and brightest leaders

5555 too intelligent and doesn't know how to trade, only begging for foreign aid and sell natural resource to survive .
I kinda surprise that people only look at their recent success, but don't look at the whole picture. yes during the Korean war the South Korea messy. But shortly after the end of the war , the United States started growing concerned with Communism 's growing popularity among impoverished nations. it had previously helped South Korea defend it borders to prevent the further spread of Communism, and so decided to aid South Korea in developing its market by subsidizing paying for (70%) of South Korea exports (70% that a lots ,almost fuking 100% helped, think about it if France do that for Laos, what would you think LAOS would be nowaday ?) Anyway, this subsidy mean that Koreans could sell their products
such as a Rice on the world market for greatly reduced prices. So since the united states government was shouldering most of the cost , giving Korean corporations a significant advantage over the companies of other developing economies such as for example Egypt of Midleeast or Ecuador of Latin America.
This advantage helped South Korea transition a subsistence economy producing largely agricultural products like Rice to a major manufacturer of goods in just less than 8 years (1953-1960) and another very major thing that South Korea had. What is it ? South Korea had very very good economic policies, and spent more money or funding excellent education programs in public schools annd building vital infrastructure for their cities and Ports. (So what was both lao governments did for their country and its people ? ) you tell me !!! so South Korea was not further held back by warfare any longer, nor did it have persistent droughts nor was it landlocked or have a resource based economy. These prerequisites helped to give the nation an unusually easy transition into the second stage of economic development , and over time this mean that the country gradually become as wealthy nation through consistent growth followed by reinvestment in the economy.
So South Korea gradually became one of the best educated countries in the world. with one of the highest rates of scientific literacy and mathematical knowledge. Its highly skilled , technologically educated public caused Korea to eventually become one of the world's foremost exporters of high-tech goods. Including software and electornics, South Korea is the world's leading producer of memory chips, and its Samsung Company is a corporate giant which exports various electronics including TVs, Microwaves, Cell phones, Air conditioners and washing machines....etc.........................
And I do read a lots of about Mr lee Kuan Ye of Singapore too, well mostly Southeast Asian nations.
and I don't like to compare between our poor LAOS with the rest of SEA nations... because its pathetic to do it..............
No need to read their history but need to see their well being of their people.North Korea propaganda that the north Korean people have good living condition my foot , the north Korea people are staving to death and the south Korea economy success.

I agreed with this gentleman of what he said, people seem to look @ their success later than look @ the whole things.

That is no excuse for landlocked and the French had not built any thing for Laos . Lao people could be more educated and the country could be more developed just like south Korea , Singapore and Taiwan if Laos stay neutral since 1975 after the Vietnam war ended. Laos is poor because of the failed system and corrupted government and no different from Soviet Empire collapsed and the Berlin wall was torn down . That is the reason why after 52 years Cuba is still under developed and the Cuban people are still living in poverty and north Korean people are starving to death. The answer is the system is failed and corrupted.

Very well ,it is a nice to look at the whole thing . It is a very smart move and very intelligent hard working of their leaders had done for their people and their counties that Lao government should copy them and get Lao people out of poverty at least instead of corruption and sold the Lao people out.
