Two Lao students won the bronze medal in the Senior Engineering competition at the International Sustainable World Energy Engineering and Environment Project Olympiad (I-SWEEEP 2013), held recently in the US.
Vithoune Phonekeo stands on the podium with the Lao flag in his hand after winning the bronze medal in the I-SWEEP competition.
The bronze medallists are Mr Vithoune Phonekeo, 15, and Mr Phouthaphone Saysana, 16, both students at Eastern Star Bilingual School in Vientiane. They attended the competition from May 8-13 at the George R. Brown Convention Centre in Houston, Texas, where they presented their project on a super energy saver light source.
A teacher at the school said on Friday that Vithoune and Phouthaphone competed against 560 young scientists from over 41 US states and 68 countries to win the medal. Their project was one of 390 presented by young scientists.
The school's manager, Mr Oguzhan Koca, told the Vientiane Times the boys had learned a lot from the competition, saying it was a special experience that they wanted to share with their classmates. The two students spent over four weeks preparing their project before attending the competition.
Mr Koca said other students at the school had won prizes in previous competitions both in Laos and overseas, but winning a medal in America was a particularly meaningful event for the school and its students.
“This is an important step to building the reputation of Laos, and for the school, our students and their families,” he added.
The medal winners said they were delighted at being awarded a prize the first time they had competed in such an event, and against such strong competition.
“It was a long, hard time for us under the guidance of our teachers to research and invent the project, which aims to save energy. We won this prize thanks to the strong encouragement from our teachers and parents who always supported us during our preparations and at the competition,” the boys said.
This is the second time students from Eastern Star have won a bronze medal at the I-SWEEP in the US. Other students have also won medals in the International Olympiad stages held in different countries.
Later this month, the school will send students to compete in other contests and hopes to get more medals, the teacher said.
I-SWEEP is a unique science fair because it focuses on energy, engineering and environmental projects. Its goal is to plant a seed in the minds of high school students about alternative solutions for a sustainable world.
I-SWEEEP is affiliated with several universities and many of the judges are university professors, so it helps these students to win scholarships and build connections.

In 2013, the young Lao have just honors award, not bronze. There were also competitors from other Asian countries who got medals, like the Korean, Chinese, Thai, Cambodian, Burmese and others.
