That's so true - a little show of wealth, like driving in a luxury car, can command respect from those officials. On the other hand, if you have nothing to show off, you'll lose their respect and might receive less than a polite treatment from both sides of the Mekong. That's the reality of life.
If you go to Thailand by car the Thai police think you are more likely toursists or middle class person who go shopping in Thailand. If you go there by bus, they assume you are potnetially illegal immigrants. This is especially true when crossing to Thailand in the southern part of Laos where most Lao people go to find work in Thailand.
Don't try to make a big deal out of it. Put yourselves in the place of Cambodians who try to cross the border between Cambodian and Thailand. Cambodian friends of mine told me it's like a nightmare when they tried to go to Thailand with their relatives, unless you carry a passport of western countries.
