I do not think you have to apologize for your fellow countrymen. Most Lao know that not all Thais look down on Lao people. There are people on both sides of the Mekong River that speak without thinking of the consequence especially in this day and age when videos posted on Youtube are there for all to see.
Both Lao and Thai should learn to out-grow of their histories. We cannot change the past but we can certainly communicate to one another like reasonable adults.
The Thai writer, Sujit Wongthes once said that Thai-Lao/Lao-Thai relation is complication because of complexes. People from one side are full of superiority complex "ปมเด่น". They think they are more educated, richer and thus any idea from the other people must be backward and unacceptable. The other side is the opposite because some of them still carry inferiority complex "ปมด้อย". Any little word that does not sound right is regarded as the other side putting them down. These complexes are non-sense and they lead to nothing but endless arguement between the people. Silly.
