Laos Red Cross Seeks Warm Clothes Donation As Temperature Falls Below Zero
VIENTIANE, Jan 24 (Bernama) -- The coldest weather in years has led to the Lao Red Cross in seeking donation for warm clothing as many northern provinces dip below freezing.
Deputy head of Cabinet for Lao Red Cross Kham Keosacksith told Xinhua news agency on Friday that recent flooding in the country has depleted supply of warm clothing for families.
"The clothes are not enough, especially this year. We have issued a notice to the public for the donation of clothes," she said.
Temperatures in Huapahn, Xieng Khuang and Xaysomboun provinces fell below freezing early Fridaymorning as cold weather lingered in the country.
Xieng Khuang experienced the coldest temperature at minus 2.2 degrees Celsius while Xaysomboun and Huapahn registered temperatures of minus 2 and minus 1.1 degree Celsius respectively.
Local media said increasing numbers of children have been visiting doctors with cold and flu like symptoms.
The Lao Department of Meteorology and Hydrology said this is the coldest weather Laos has experienced in many years.
According to the department, temperature is expected to rise by several degrees on Friday before falling again over the Chinese lunar New Year at the end of January.
