With the population about 6 million people, it's not sufficient for local producer to produce with the low cost. Therefore, importing is more favorable than produce locally. This will put the local producers become in the worst position due to the low competitiveness comparing to its neighbors.
There are a few more reason behind the lack of Laos locally produced commodities but above is one of the most important explanation.
what the government should do are;
1. Encourage people to have more children in order to create the economy of scale for the local firms.
2. Educate them, so these people will have ability to start their own firms and create the new technique to produce in order to compete with neighbors.

I agree with you on what the government should do , I used to think that the more larger the population is, the more possibility we can expand our market so the more profit we gain. but after long information collecting and after long reflection, I saw that the second point is more important than the first one because we have three nations who have few population as examples such as Switzerland, Israel and Singapore that can largely compete with huge industrial countries in term of skill and knowledge of their workers.
The important thing the government should do is to teach it people about eagerness to be successful, the will to win, the motivation to earn a good living . The last and the most important thing is to create skilled workers, create a standard for workers who could use new technology in a larger scale.
Most investors don't need to teach their newly recruited workers due to loss of time and money. the lao government have to invest more to educate its own people with more attentions before it will be too late .
