Vientiane: A late equaliser from Sinthanong Phanvongsa salvaged a point for Laos as the AFC U-16 Championship 2014 qualifying Group H hosts drew 1-1 with Malaysia on Saturday.
The match at the National Sports Complex in the Laotian capital remained goalless until the 80th minute when Ahmad Ikhwan bin Hafiz finally broke the deadlock and just as it was looking like the three points would be going Malaysia’s way, Sinthanong struck with two minutes remaining to ensure a share of the spoils.
The draw leaves Laos and Malaysia playing catch up following the opening round of matches after Brunei, inspired by a Muhamad Syahmi bin Rashid hat-trick, defeated Guam 4-1 in the earlier game at the same venue.
The winners of the ten qualifying groups and the best five runners-up will join hosts Thailand in the finals of the 2014 AFC U-16 Championship.
