Not being "officially" colonized is more like it.
Anyway, the status of NOT being colonized is in itself basically meaningless with regards to the current Thailand political and economic standing as well as its reputation in the world. Look at Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, China etc, that were all colonized to some extent, and compare the current economy and standard of living level in these countries with those of Thailand. I think the "Not being colonized" label seems to have given Thailand and Thai people a fake pride. Maybe Thailand could have been in a better shape politically and more developed economically if it were colonized to some extent by, let say, England. The current political situation of Thailand is not really different from those of a third world country and this seems to be a drag to its potential for higher economic development and equality of its people.

Yes, Democracy on the Paper not on the Practice.
Thailand and Thai people love to claimed that they're a Democracy country But they didn't know the whole Thailand had been ran by a military dictatorship since 1932...
Another thing Thai people love to say: Siamese had never colony to any countries. 555 very funny, Burmese burned them down twice and appointed a governor to run Ayudthaya. and the British landed in Burma, India and Malaysia Thai also side with them too.here another one, Japanese kicked the West's @ss and Por Phibousongkham kissed the @ss by allowed the Japanese troops land in Siam... samething with Yankee's Bases around Thailand...
As for Tony Blair, Thai government pay him to make some speech in the Parliament... not clear the Problem in Thailand.
You misunderstood what he said in Thai and your reply to his statement is out of context. Especially, you are ignorant about the education in Thailand. It is far better than in many countries in ASEAN, especially in Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and the Philippines.
