Construction of T5 road on track to begin this year
The Vientiane Public Works and Transport Department has signed contracts with local construction companies to build the T5 road at a cost of more than 115 billion kip.
The new road will run from the Phonthong-Dongdok road near Mittaphap Hospital through the Nongtha- Tanmixay road and will link to the Sikeuth-Dongdok road in Samket village.
The highway will be 5.2km long and 12 metres wide, and will have drainage, street lighting and traffic lights.
Construction is set to start at the end of this year and is scheduled for completion in two years time.
Department Deputy Director Mr Oudon Nhengvannavong said this project falls within the designated area traversed by the T and P roads.
The scheme was first adopted by the government in 1991 and in 2008 the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) worked with the Public Works and Transport Institute to survey the area. The survey was completed in March this year and is included in the vision for the development of Vientiane by 2030.
Mr Oudon said the objective is to meet the socio-economic needs of Vientiane, with the capital's population projected to rise to 1.4 million by 2030. The government and Vientiane authorities have decided to provide grants for road building, including the T5 road. The road will boost Vienti ane's image as a modern capital and will help the city to become more attractive. It will also make travel easier for road users and anticipates the future increase in tr affic. By providing a more direct route through Vientiane, goods haulage transport times will be reduced.
The signing ceremony for the project was held in Vientiane on Tuesday between department Director Mr Detsongkham Thammavong, Lao Concrete KM5 Company Director Mr Saysamone Xayasone and Somphoumy Road, Bridge, Building and Irrigation Construction Company Director Mr Soumphou Sibounheuang in the presence of the Vice Mayor of Vientiane Mr Saithong Keoduangdy and other officials.

You need to listen up and learn some lessons from them and don't bring back from 36 years ago. it is past and forgive and forget each other. I think they have concerned for lao well being. I know the quality of building roads in lao is not up to standard of international work. i will give an example, the road builded from Paxe to Vat Phu Champassak not even a year yet, and it allready damaged all of roads. that how they have wasted all the money and times.
