SOURCE CIA World Factbook, 14 June, 2007 DEFINITION National estimates of the percentage of the population lying below the poverty line are based on surveys of sub-groups, with the results weighted by the number of people in each group. Definitions of poverty vary considerably among nations. For example, rich nations generally employ more generous standards of poverty than poor nations. Per $ GDP figures expressed per 1 trillion $ gross domestic product. Economy Statistics > Population below poverty line (per $ GDP) (most recent) by country
Rich and poor countries are linked in many ways—by foreign aid, commerce, migration, the environment, and military affairs. The Commitment to Development Index (CDI) rates 22 rich countries on how much they help poor countries build prosperity, good government, and security. Each rich country gets scores in seven policy areas, which are averaged for an overall score.
Data for the following table were reported by the International Food Policy Research Institute in 2009. The calculation of GHI scores is restricted to developing countries and countries in transition for which measuring hunger is considered most relevant. Developed countries and countries with a GHI of less than 5 are not included. For explanations, please refer to the notes below the table.
