You do not know what exactly, but you just intimidating others, why?
Kathong or Krathong is Kmer (Cambodian) word, and this word has been used in Siam about R4 or R5 (not very sure).
The correct word in Lao is ‘Lai Hua Fai’
Kathongin Lao word means, when you are very very bad luck, then you go to temple, the monk will pray and bless for you which we call (Soud leaurd nam), then the monk will have a Kathong which made of banana bark with different shape (triangle or square), depends on what believe, inside of the Kathong, there will be little boxes/rooms that contain food such as fruit, sweet, rice, meat etc.., this Kathong will be thrown at the corner of the roads, or some where people can not touch ??? rather than floating on the river.
Why we do/believe this? Because we (Lao people) are Theravada Buddhism with Animist practices.
Right but I still don't understand why budhism and animist go along with pretty well with the lao or thai people while the budhist dictrines and those of animism's don't match at all with each other ? budhist doctrines or teachings never taught people to Soud leaurd nam to avoid bad luck or some thing like that or asking for the better number of lottery from momks ???seems that people 're more and more supersticious nowavday...ອັຕຕະຫິ ອັຕຕະໂນນາໂຖ !!!

Oh, yes, if you read the doctrines thoroughly there are plenty of connections between Buddhism and animist in the past and current practices, such as blessings for luck.
Current practice of Buddhism is blessing when you offer something, e.g, if you go for Tark Bard, the monk will always bless you as you may hear at the end of the blessing said that ‘Sou Kang Pa Lang’- that is blessing. And if you notice in Basi-Sou Kuan ceremony, you will see the pray that use the Buddhist (Pali) language like Na Mo Ta Sa Pa Ka Va To A La Ha To.....
