That's because they are smart & knew that is very bad for their posture and poor blood circulations for their legs! I don't think Buddha would mind if we modify our tradition so that our health is not being compromised.
I don't think it would be such a bad idea to place phakuan on the table and let people sit around the chairs around the table so their back can be supported by the back of the chair and besides that it is more civilized to no longer sit on the floor like medieval time.

Hey! just because it works for you that doesn't mean it works for every one else! It is more like a matter of health & physical problem for the majority of people regardless of their status & it is so meaningless for Lao people to judge on this kind of matter.
Why it is so terrible for you guys if an individual wanted to practice their religion with out compromising their health & physical?
It shouldn't matter if the individual is local Lao, Lao abroad who was not born or grew up in Laos.
This kind of sitting position is bad for any one, foreigner or Laotians. If only people knew it has a bad effect on your body concerning the posture for your back & the blood circulation inside your legs .
This is why the enlighten Buddha & foreign people didn't chose this position to sit for meditation & Yoga for both males & females, because it requires the length of time which made it so intolerable for anyone to endures on the daily bases or even on occasion
