(KPL) Fifty-four countries, that attended the UN Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review (UPR) meeting, have shown interest in and recommended on the human rights report of Laos, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held here yesterday a meeting to review the participation of Laos in the UN Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review (UPR) meeting held in May in Switzerland.
The UPR meeting gave diplomatic officials and international organisations in Laos an opportunity to understand the implementation of the Lao government policy on protecting and promoting human rights in the Lao PDR, which is aimed at ensuring that the Lao people enjoy freedom in all areas as stipulated by the national constitution and laws of the country, according to a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Hundred and seven recommends and questions were raised at the UN meeting by the participating countries.
These included 54 questions and recommends responded and approved, three denied and 48 pledged by the Lao government to be answered at later time.
Yesterday�s meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Phongsavath Boupha, and UN Resident Coordinator, Ms. Sonam Yangchen Rana, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organisations and non-government organisations as well as relevant officials.
