Mr Kaczynski and his colleagues were flying in a Tupolev Tu-154 when it crashed on approaching the airport.

The plane came down a mile away from Smolensk airport, 220 miles south of Moscow, in foggy conditions. The Tupolev Tu-154 is described as the 'workhorse' of the Soviet airlines for decades, and aviation experts say it has a reasonable safety record for the amount of aircraft in use.
“The 154 is by a wide margin the most successful jet ever built by a communist economic system,” said Richard Aboulafia, vice president at Teal Group, a Virginia-based consultant.
“It was created at the height of the old Soviet Union’s ability to invent equipment that at least approximated the achievements of the West. The real problem is regulatory oversight in many of the regions where it’s used. Corruption and neglect almost guarantee trouble.”

The Tu-154 has a fatal accident every 431,200 flights, according to London-based aviation consultant Ascend. The Boeing 737, the world’s best-selling passenger plane, crashes every 2.68 million flights.

The planes can hold between 114 and 180 passengers, and are designed for heavy use in demanding conditions. Design criteria included the ability to operate from gravel or packed earth airfields, to be able to fly at high altitudes above most Soviet Union air traffic, and good field performance in Arctic conditions.

The plane was designed in the mid 1960s, and was Aeroflot's standard craft from the early 1970s until this year.

In January 2010 the Russian national carrier announced the retirement of its Tupolev Tu-154 fleet after 40 years of service, but the plane remains the standard airliner for routes across the former Soviet Union and in Eastern Europe and Iran.

In July last year, a Tu-154 crashed in Iran, killing 168 people. It was the eight fatal incident involving a Tu-154 in ten years.

Plane built from Russia or fromer CCCP is number one on crahs list of
World Aviation History.
 
I don't trust Soviet or Russia aircraft made.
Every time I go to Laos, I didn't fly with Laos Airline from Thailand to
Laos. My Fright ticket only from US to Bangkok, then my cousin in
Bangkok drove me to Nong Khay.

You're right about this, many years ago there was report 20/20 TV show, about how the Russian used rubber bans to hold their commercial air plane parts together to keep it from braking off completely, and it was discover through investigation after the air plane crashed.

I'm not look down my motherland like your accusation. I was talking
about mid 90's, Laos Airlines was used Soviet aircraft made ANH-22, those
aircraft was built in the 60's. I took a fright from Bangkok Int- Air Port to
Vientiane by Lao Airlines in 2001. I'm not sure who made this aircraft, it looks
new model but I was almost be heart attack when they turn on A/C on mid air,
it sound like a plane is going down. A/C sound is terrible sound plus a steam
of cool air came out like fire smoke, and a whole plane was shaking. All the
passengers on that fright just look each other, I believed they were thought
same what I was thought during that moment.

I'm positive open my eyes and talking with a real happen, I'm not just closed
my eyes and talking **** about my own motherland.

Yeahhh Bro, you right about what you said. Anh 24 and Anh 26, they, the PDR used it for International  Flight for Surrounding neighbors countries. from what i think, Early 80-late 20000. and they stop use it because they replaces with a small Jets.But they still flying it for Domestic flight i guess. and another one, Mi6 and Mi8 helicopters all of these plans built by Soviet erra. i believe they used these Helicopters for domestic in the country..

Moscow ( AFP )- The pilot of a plane that crashed and killed Poland's
president had received explicit weather warning before they attempted
to land at a fog-bound Russian airport, investigators said Monday.

Russian official said flight data showed air traffic controllers recommended
the crew divert to another airport while Polish prosecutors said there was
no indication they were pressured by those on board to override the advice.

Nothing can blame the aircraft.
But, the pilots attempted to land even they received warning from air traffic
controllers to divert to land another airport. If the pilots had been followed by
the recommendations from air controllers center, this plane will be safe landing
and no one get killed.
