The two ministries responsible for vehicle registration are planning to alter the number plates of vehicles in the capital following a change to the official name of the city.
Some years ago the government renamed the capital of Laos, Vientiane (occasionally Vientiane capital) from the former Vientiane Municipality, but the registration plates of vehicles in the capital remained the same - still using the term Vientiane Municipality.
Officials plan to change the number plates of vehicles in Vientiane.
The Director General of the Transport Department, Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Mr Viengsavath Siphandone, told the Vientiane Times yesterday that officials at the ministry and the Ministry of Public Security are working on factors necessary to prepare for the change.
“We have a plan to change them,” he said, adding that this should be done in line with the capital's official name change.
But the director was unable to confirm as to exactly when the officials will start to take action on the matter. It is also still unclear as to who is going to pay for the new plates to replace the old ones.
“Further talks are needed to decide who will be responsible for the cost of replacement - car owners or the government,” he said, adding that this is the main concern as the total cost for all vehicles in Vientiane will be high.
However, it is understood that the public could have a reasonable complaint if they are made solely responsible for the cost as they have already paid for registration once, when the vehicle was first allowed on the road.
After the capital's official name change, the public has been closely following the situation, especially owners of new cars as they, not unreasonably, are afraid of having to pay twice in a short period for the same thing.
I'll tell you idiot Gorv, no needs to change the old ones but do the new ones. Let the old ones go. Just make it simple as usaul so that no one has to pay more on this. That's it!
at my place i have to pay every year for the plate tab in average of $100 - 150 a year /depends on the car age.
if your car is older than 5 yrs, you have to pay for the emision test $15.00
every 5th year every car has to replace the whole plate and add the additional $7-10 to the anual fee.
every 5 yrs you have to renew your driver license, that cost $25.00.
so Laos should do the same way to collect the fund/money to build and maintain the road.
if you don't do your part, the goverment can not do their job.
be fair on the tax and duties.

They don't care about the roads, they never did and they never will. They only care about money going into their pockets. You think this is the USA or something? This is facking communist Lao and corruption.
Yeah when they build that bullet train and it crashes and kills people, we'll see that 7 billion dollars go down the drain and Lao people will be still paying back the chinese for the rest of their lives.
